В этот день Святая Церковь молитвенно вспоминает мученическую кончину величайшего из пророков – святого Иоанна Крестителя. Его называют «ангелом в теле» за чистоту и строгость жизни, и «Предтечею» за то, что он приготовил путь Господу, призывая всех к покаянию и крестя Самого Христа в водах Иордана.

Святой Иоанн с дерзновением обличал грех, и за это был заключён в темницу по приказу царя Ирода. Но и там его дух не сломился. В конце концов, по злобе Иродиады и прихоти Ирода, Креститель Господень был усечён мечом. Его святая глава была вынесена на блюде, как «трофей» нечестия, но для верующих это стало образом мужества и непреклонности в истине.

Церковь установила этот день как строгий пост — мы воздерживаемся от скоромной пищи, вина и масла, напоминая себе, что праведность требует от нас жертвы. Пост в день Усекновения связан и с тем, что Иоанн Предтеча был убит во время пиршества: поэтому верные в этот день воздерживаются от излишеств, противопоставляя трезвение и молитву праздности и греху.

Святитель Димитрий Ростовский писал, что «Иоанн был светильник истины, горящий любовью к Богу и неугасимый в дерзновении против зла». Его голос «покайтесь» звучит и для нас, призывая каждого христианина отвергнуть страсти и очистить сердце.

Так Святая Церковь чтит память Предтечи не только как пророка и мученика, но и как вечного свидетеля Христа – Света миру.

September 11 – The Beheading of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John

Strict Fast

On this day the Holy Church prayerfully commemorates the martyrdom of the greatest of the prophets – St. John the Baptist. He is called the “angel in the flesh” for the purity and severity of his life, and the “Forerunner” because he prepared the way of the Lord, calling all people to repentance and baptizing Christ Himself in the waters of the Jordan.

St. John boldly rebuked sin, and for this he was cast into prison by order of King Herod. Yet even in chains his spirit was not broken. At last, through the malice of Herodias and the weakness of Herod, the Baptist was slain with the sword. His holy head was brought forth upon a platter as a trophy of wickedness, but for the faithful it became a sign of courage and steadfastness in the truth.

The Church has appointed this day as a strict fast. We abstain from meat, dairy, wine, and oil, reminding ourselves that righteousness demands sacrifice. The fast is also connected with the fact that St. John was slain during a banquet: therefore, the faithful turn away from excess and feasting on this day, embracing sobriety and prayer instead of indulgence and sin.

St. Demetrius of Rostov wrote that “John was a lamp of truth, burning with love for God and unquenchable in his boldness against evil.” His voice, crying “Repent,” still reaches us today, calling every Christian to renounce sinful passions and purify the heart.

Thus, the Holy Church honours the memory of the Forerunner not only as a prophet and martyr, but as the eternal witness to Christ – the true Light of the world.
